Advantages: It will stay with you for a long time
Disadvantages: Very disturbing
I read American Psycho (several times) about 7 or 8 years ago. It still sticks in my head as one of the most powerful books I’ve read, having left me feeling as if my soul had been scrubbed with a brillo pad. The book potters along nicely for the first hundred pages building up a vivid picture of “the heroes” angry but dull, monochrome, obsessive label-loving lifestyle. Then things start to creep in, almost unnoticed, as he casually tortures and murders people with much less concern than he puts into purchasing a new suit, building a very nasty picture of him and the culture he was representative of (Yuppies take a real pasting on the satire front). At the time the book was vilified as gratuitous by many, but now seems to have gained wide (and very deserved IMO) credibility. I’m afraid to watch the film in case it disappoints, and anyway, if I had to sit next to somone in an Armani I'd probably wet myself. Buy this book.
