Advantages: HUMOUR
Disadvantages: NOT MUCH ON LATER DAYS
GROW UP is the title of actor Keith Allen's autobiography.
The majority of the book concentrates on Allen's teenage and early twenties. As a child Keith's father worked for the navy so was always away. Consequently, he had no male role model so was mischievious. This meant he had difficulties knowing what he wanted to be. Thi is a good section as it shows that Keith's rebel nature was born through even in his early years.
Keith writes that he didn't want to go to university so had a few rubbish jobs which provide some funny anecdotes. When he moved to London he got involved with the punk attitude and so music and rebelling became his way of life. There are many wild stories in this section that shocked me and also made me laugh.
He admits his love for the ladies which means he has a few illegitimate children. One tale about having sex with a lady who is now a Dame is particularly intriguing. While some of these sexual stories are a little disgusting they are very honest and funny.
Keith explain how he got in to acting and music, but why he never wanted the limelight. It comes across as though fame came to Keith and not the other way around. He talks about the shows he has ben on, but why he preferes going to Glastonbury and having a good time rather than his job. He talks about his famous friends and there are some hillarious stories involving them.
He does talk about his family and of course Lily and the success she's having. However, it comes acros as if he is more friends to his children than a father.
Keith's wit lights up the book with so many funny stories. The fact he focuses on his younger life is more interesting because it was so eventful. There are many stories I didn't mention because it would spoil it for you if you read. I would have like to have read more on his later days and about his children. The writing style is great and each story flys by. The language is very rude so not for the easily sensitive. There are lots of photos of him as well.
At 384 pages this is an autobiography that will make you laugh.
