After reading Almost a Crime I decided to check out her other books. I have not been disappointed. The story starts off in 1995 when three ladies meet for lunch as they have done for the past 50 years on that date and then it goes off into the past in fact the year 1938. It mainly follows the main character Grace around and how she meets her husband Charles and all the differences in their lifes. The fortunes are quickly changed as war breaks out and Charles is drafted into the army. The story tells us how things were during the wartime and as the characters are mainly upper class how it affects them if at all. Grace takes in two evacuees David and Daniel who she comes to look upon as her ...

Fantastic characters, great style, compelling reading. Not suitable for everyone.

Intricate plot that is unputdownable It can be unputdownable

Easy to read. No point to the story – twaddle!

fast paced plot, good characters, great descriptions Its basic, a plot thread that is predictable from this author

A great plot that keeps you guessing Character development was sometimes a bit poor and didn't ring true
