Advantages: Well written, uplifting.

Disadvantages: made me so very angry at his father

I read this book at a furious pace, skipping ahead a few pages every now and again, hoping to read about the death of Malachy Senior, wanting to dance on his grave. A poor Irish Catholic childhood, Frank and his family suffer through every indignity known. His mother, Angela, bearing a child a year and (and losing baby after baby to poverty), suffering the fleas, flies, cold, floods, and finally prostituting herself to her cousin so the family can have a roof over their heads.
Frank has watched it all and tells the story of a child who pretended not to see his mother begging for food, hiding the shame that his father Malachy spends his wages in the various bars, holding on to his dream of returning to America where he was born and his baby sister died.
