Advantages: Educational & entertaining
Disadvantages: Predicatable twist
I have only just finished reading this book. I only got it because I read the Da Vinci code just before I watched the film and wanted to do the same with this book.
In this book we re-visit Professor Robert Langford and the Catholic religion, this time however it is a race against time before a bomb blows up the Vatican. The "presumed extinct" Illuminati are brought back to life and an enthralling trip taks you from Massachusettes to Switzerland then landing in Rome. It shows the eternal war between Science and Religion and explores just how far Scientists and Religious believers are prepared to go to prove what they believe in is right. The book is set mainly in Rome and gives some detailed descriptions of buildings in Rome. It also gives you a different perspective on Rome, looking at it through Professor Robert Langdon's eyes so things you wouldn't necessarily have known about are used in this book and details that aren't common knowledge are presented as the main scene setters. A detailed description of the Vatican is always exciting and eye opening.
I did wonder about this book after all the critics The Da Vinci Code allegedly gained from the Catholic Church I was shocked Dan Brown went there again. When you read it it's informative, exciting and hard to put down. There are some good twists in it but unfortunately they are expected because of watching/reading the Da Vinci Code. The fact that it is educational and entertaining is a bonus.
I would recommend it and imagine it would be a good book to use for a book club. A good twist at the end although it can be far fetched in places. I look forward to see how they have adapted this in to a film. Overall a good read.
Summary: Worth reading!
