When I was younger I always had my nose in a book. Being the huge animal lover I was (and still am), I often chose to read books about animals. The Animal Ark book series by Lucy Daniels was very popular with me, and one of the more recent titles is Raccoons on the Roof.

Although you should never judge a book by its cover, I always do, so it is important that it looks good! The cover to Raccoons on the Roof is quite peculiar. The image of the raccoons themselves, very dark black creatures against a night sky, is quite frightening and hideous. However there is a baby raccoon and it looks so sweet and adorable you forget that you once felt the raccoon was going to fly out and attack you. Instead you find yourself cooing at the baby raccoon, temted to read the book.

The book itself is about Mandy Hope, whose parents are vets. A raccoon and baby have settled on top of the house and Mandy is thrilled. Unfortnately not everybody feels the same and has set traps to harm the creature. Mandy has to try and convince them not to harm the animals, but can she do it before its too late?

This is quite a nice little story. I am not a fan of raccoons, not at all, but this one did have me feeling sorry for the creatures, which I imagine was the authors intensions. It is ideal, I feel, for children around the ages of 8 to 13. The text itself is a nice big size so they dont strain their eyes, and the language is to the point. It is quite simple so they will not be worrying that they do not understand it. Not only that but it makes a great light read for adults too as it does not require much thinking. It is also a good one for the less confident reader, helping them build their ability and helping them to eventually progress to something more challenging.

The book can be bought in most good book stores for around £5.99, in shops such as WHSmith or Waterstones. However if you go over to Amazon.co.uk you can get it for just 1p. Even with the postage and packaging charges of £2.21, it is a pretty good price! I would definitely recommend you buy it from Amazon to get the best deal.

Okay so it isnt the greatest book in the series, but they cant all hold that title. This would be perfect for anybody who has a strange obsession with raccoons, but also makes a nice read for fans of the series and animals in general. It is definitely worth a read, even if just the one time.
