After being none too impressed with the two previous books in this series, I found myself once again in the library hovering over the ghosts and horror section with the next book in the series in my sweaty little hand....hence this review!
The book I will now review is - "Skin trade by Laurell K Hamilton".
After receiving a head in a box, and a phone call that her name and a not so nice message had been written in the blood that belonged to the head, Anita gets the feeling it's going to be one of those days!
Not only is she now the human servant and lover of the master of St Louis, vampire Jean-Claude, but due to his transferral of powers to her she now is a human, none blood taking vampire, needing to feed her power base and her other lovers (long story!), by having sex....lots of it!
Not only this but she is now an official marshal of the law due to her long standing position of vampire killer, being not so affectionately known as "the executioner", which is admittedly better than her fellow vampire hunter, his nickname is death!
After getting the call to go to Las Vegas to try and follow up on the head in box, it soon becomes apparent that an old foe is trying to lure her to "sin city", and this may well be a trap!
Not only this, but due to her reputation as a "vampire lover" her position as a marshal of the law is compromised with the local law enforcement, meaning her job is made that little bit more difficult.
Will Anita solve the case, or will the old foe uncover something much worse, something or someone as old as time itself?
I have to say I quite enjoyed this book!
The beginning didn't drag too much, though as someone who is more than familiar with most of the characters there didn't need to be much introduction to them.
The book reads almost like a thriller/murder mystery, with the victims leaving clues at each scene, though of course there is much more blood and gore with a supernatural slant.
At all times the book seems to have at least two storylines going on at the same time, one being the ongoing murder investigation and one being the storyline of Anita's lycanthropy and the different strains she carries in her blood, meaning that she can pretty much have the option of changing into one of five different types of were animals.
With the tiger strain being the most dominant, and the tigers being part of the master vampire of Las Vegas clan, Anita gets drawn into a struggle of power with them too, of course meaning lots of blood, fighting and sex!
The book is quite detailed in every aspect, meaning that this book is meant for adults only, this is not fluffy like Twilight!
The gore and murder is localised around vampire's and other type's of supernatural creatures, so the sky's the limit imagination wise, but is very raw in content as is the sex.
The entire book (as all the previous books also) are written in the first person perspective, ie Anita's, this makes for an easy read bookwise, but due to just how much is happening throughout the storyline, you will probably find you will have go over old ground on more than occasion to work out who a new character is!
Price wise these are available from www.amazon.co.uk for the sum of £4.99.
This is a much better offering in the series, the story is like a twisted version of CSi!
Thanks for reading x
