Having read both, I think that both have merit, but as I am more of a fan of the traditional style of crime fiction than anything else, the Mitchell and Markby novels are my preferred choice. Although my preferred choice, that isn't to say that I particularly like the main characters - Meredith Mitchell and Alan Markby. Sally Caswell persuades her husband to leave London to live a more peaceful life in rural Oxfordshire. Unfortunately, her life has become anything but peaceful. Her husband is quarrelsome, particularly with the elderly next-door neighbour. Then something happens that makes Sally fear for her husband's safety - a letter bomb arrives and she presumes that because her husband works with animals, he is being targeted by animal rights activists and they frequently receive anonymous threats in the post.
