Advantages: A good read
Disadvantages: slightly dated
The Anne of Avonlea books have always been some of my favourite books. I read them and re-read them as a child (from about 9 years onwards). I can still sit down and read them now. Anne is an orphan with character who is adopted (unseen) by a brother and sister in the wilds of early 20th century America. Imagine the settings of the Waltons and Little House on the Prarie and you can imagine the setting of Anne. Matilda and Matthew requested a young boy to help around the farm and they received Anne with her bright red hair and temper to match! Mind you, Anne gets in more than enough scrapes to satisfy any boy. The one that sticks in my mind was the day she dyed her hair green.........you'll have to read it to find out why! The Avonlea books follow Anne's life from her first adoption to adulthood. She grows up and matures but never quite becomes conventional. Please buy this for your daughters (sorry to be sexist but I don't think most boys would appreciate this!) and read it yourself aswell.

- 24/09/00 Sorry to bear bad news, but it was Marilla, not Matilda, and Prince Edward Island, in Canada, not America! The whole series is great though - I love them all! |
