Advantages: Good Book, Detailed, Comprehensive
Disadvantages: None
This book is brilliant if you want a excellent and comprehensive book on an introduction to anti discriminatory practice.I first used this book to complete a project on models of disability and also gender. I bought this book because it is very detailed and I found it to be very detailed and it also has great pictures to accompany the text that is written in this book. This book can be used as a textbook, for courses like GNVQ in health and social care and the HND disability studies. (I personally used it for both, I have also used this book for the HND course that I am presently on). It can also be picked up and read by anyone who wants to read about anti discriminatory practice. Back to the book. This book has eight main themes/ chapters which are:- Introduction The theory base, Gender and sexism Ethnicity and racism, Ageism and alienation, Disability, Other sources of oppression and also Conclusion. Introduction This is a brilliant introduction of this book, it includes a historical background on anti discriminatory practice, which is very detailed and also comprehensive. Other themes that are covered in this section are good anti discriminatory practice, multiple oppressions and also structure and outline. The theory base This section of the book covers themes like social divisions and social structure. In this section there is also a lot on the PCS model- which has some clear diagrams to show what is covered. Also covered in this section is also ideology; the power of idea’s and the role of language. Gender and sexism This section of the book covers themes like what is sexism? The implications for social work, sexism and men, the feminist response and also towards anti sexist response. Ethnicity and racism I personally think that this has to be the one of the top two chapters of this book. The topics that are cove
red in this section are: What is racism, anti discriminatory response, and also race, class and gender. Ageism and alienation This section of the book on anti discriminatory practice, covers what is ageism? The implication for social work, the anti ageism response and also multiple oppressions. Disability I personally think that this has to be the best section in the whole of this book. The topics that I think are covered the best are what is disableism, the disabled people’s movement, multiple oppressions and also towards a anti disablist practice. Other sources of oppression This section on the book on anti discriminatory practice, covers aspects of oppression, sexual identity, religion, mental health problems and also mental impairment. Conclusion. This section of the book is a conclusion of the themes that are covered in this book. I have to say this book is very good for people who would like to study social work or social aspects of life. I also have to say that nearly everyone in my class at university has a copy of this book and they also find it very useful for most of their assignments. This book is one in a series of books that are also aimed at social workers. Details on this book Title: Anti Discriminatory Practice Author: Neil Thompson Published by: BASW ISBN: 0 333 69369 8
