As the title suggests, my quest is continuing to research my favourite authors and then wow you or bore you with my new found knowledge. Jeffrey Archer was born on April 15th 1940, to a soldier called William, and a journalist Lola. He was educated at Wellington School and Brasenose College, Oxford, where he gained a certificate in education. In 1969 he became the youngest member of the House of Commons, where he served until 1974. In the same year, after making a bad decision regarding investments, he lost all of his money, and this was the experiece that he based his firt novel, "Not A Penny More, Not A Penny Less" on. He married Mary in 1966, and became the father of two children, and has mostly lived in Cambridge and London. Not a lot of people know that was also a world class sprinter and represented Great Britain in international competition. He was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Pary in 1985 and reached the House of Lords in 1992. When he turned his hand to writing, all of his novels have been international best sellers. I am one of the millions who has read and enjoyed his novels, not only once but time and time again, as the stories are so enthralling. Kane and Abel is my personal favourite, and it was the book that introduced my to Archer. Archer also started to branch out and in the 1980's he wrote 2 plays and became the owner of The Playhouse in London. In the late 80's Archer seemed to attract scandal and conflict wherever he went, and after he denied being on a dinner date with a former prostitute, he sued a tabloid newspaper after they continued to print the accusations. In 1987, a libel trial against The Daily Star commenced and Archer was awarded substantial damages, as his friend Terence Baker provided him with an alibi, and said on the night in question Archer was with him and not Monica Coghlan. In 1999 he initially stood as
the Conservative candidate for The Mayor of London, but after becoming embroiled in another scandal, he was forced to step down. This time the scandal was regarding the trial after Nick Elliot claimed that before his death, Baker confessed he had lied under oath. Then to add insult to injury, another friend Ted Francis has admitted lying. Monica Coghlan always stood by her story, and wanted a court to rehear the evidence, but sadly she will never see this as she was killed in a car crash earlier this month. The Daily Star are now taking action to recover the money awarded to Archer, and he has been arrested by police. Archer is a prolific novelist, but maybe his autobiography will be more gripping than anything he could dream up.
