In some weird twist of fate, myself and my good lady friend Lorraine appear to have assumed guardianship over a young mohican giraffe named Geoffrey. Now, we are not sure what age he is exactly, although it is "that difficult age" whatever that may be in mohican giraffes - but young Geoffrey is currently into reading adventure books. Occasionally, I will pick one up that Geoffrey has been particularly enthusiastic about (this usually means that he has decided to re-enact parts of it round the house, with all the ensuing mess that this creates). In this case it was Artemis Fowl, by the debut Irish author Eoin Colfer, which had been shortlisted for the ... Read the complete review

Artemis Fowl was tipped to be the next "Harry Potter", and I thought I would see if the book lived up to the hype. Since it was shortlisted for the Whitbread Book of the Year Award Children's Book Category (2001) and it won the WH Smith Children's Book of the Year Award (2002), I knew I was going to be in for a good read. Eoin Colfer was offered £500,000 for this, his first UK-published novel. The Hype was amazing in the Book World, and after reading so much about it in the trade magazines, I knew I had to go out and get a copy. Jacket and Bibliographical Info -------- Its shiny, its bronze with gold sparkly bits, its now out in ... Read the complete review

If you listen to publisher's walls carefully enough, you can hear desperate MD's ordering their subordinates to "find me the next Harry Potter". Many are taking the bait, and many more are very poor indeed. Whilst it is popular to knock Harry Potter now that he's successful, there are many other fine stories in the children's fantasy genre, none more so than "Artemis Fowl." The book's name-sake is a twelve year old child prodigy, who is helping to run his family business of crookedness and wealth development. Fowl has been investigating the existence of fairies and the like, and has a plan to steal their fabled gold. ... Read the complete review

Artemis Fowl tells the story of twelve year old criminal mastermind, Artemis Fowl, facing off against the LEPrecon unit an elite crime fighting unit with a difference: it is made up of fairies. These fairies, however, are not kind and childlike, they are heavily armed and seriously ticked off. The trouble begins when young Artemis Fowl, in an attempt to rebuild his families wealth, decides to try and get his hands on fairie gold. He starts his plan by kidnapping captain Holly Short, an LEP officer. When the LEPrecon unit is sent in prepared for a simple mission against a twelve year old, they get a lot more than they bargained for, Young artemis seems to be ahead ... Read the complete review
