Advantages: Fast, furious, fun, fairies

Disadvantages: What disadvantages?

If you listen to publisher's walls carefully enough, you can hear desperate MD's ordering their subordinates to "find me the next Harry Potter". Many are taking the bait, and many more are very poor indeed. Whilst it is popular to knock Harry Potter now that he's successful, there are many other fine stories in the children's fantasy genre, none more so than "Artemis Fowl."

The book's name-sake is a twelve year old child prodigy, who is helping to run his family business of crookedness and wealth development. Fowl has been investigating the existence of fairies and the like, and has a plan to steal their fabled gold.

Enter Holly Short, an elf who works for the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance). She inadvertantly gets stuck into his kidnapping plot, and events take many interesting twists from here, led in part by her bumbling boss Commander Root.

The surprising and fantastic description in this alternate and technologically advanced world is part of the charm of the book. The fact that fairies exist is something, let alone that they carry guns and have an equivalent to the SAS.

The humour of the story is superb, full of knowing asides to the reader (old and young), as well as a completely new take on the "fart gag". Since much of the comedy is character-driven, this makes the story all the more enjoyable.

It is risky to throw the word "clasic" about, since many classics are very short-lived, yet this book really does have a something about it that is quite unlike any other I've read before. It is a completely different world than I'd imagined, so challenging my original thoughts. At the same time, you are excited by the story, and actually feel for the characters involved.

Go and buy the book now in order to be leading the craze that will inevitably follow this book, rather than catch up it its wake.
