Her determined resistance to the persistent Irish charmer Rory--he's too young, she doesn't have casual affairs--and the apparent ambivalence of Ben, a divorced and know-it-all artistic director of an ad agency, sets up a plot where the embryonic art gallery and Thea's accompanying search for a more satisfying life form centre stage, making any love interest incidental.

Whilst shes there she ensconces herself in Rorys life, discovers hes a fabulous artist and the rest is ploddingly predictably dull. Boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, girl falls for other boy, other boy has baggage. Blah blah blah and still it has a sugar sweet fairy tale ending. Its reminiscent of the plot of any Mills and Boon romance novel. Apply...more

Premium Review Artistic Licence - Katie Fforde: No Artistic Licence Needed To Read This Book! (430 words)
by - written on 20/07/09 (Very useful, 46 readings)
Rating:

Artistic Licence is one of my favourite Katie Fforde novels. I've read it three times and loved it each and every time. It tells the story of Thea, a landlady with a house full of students. After a trip to France with her best friend Molly she decides to go to Ireland with Rory - an artist she meets in France - to get away from it all. Trouble is Molly, Petal (one of Thea's lodgers) and Petal's Uncle Ben rock up in Ireland demanding to see Rory's paintings. And that's just the start of things! I loved Artistic Licence. I thought it was an easy read and I really enjoyed all of the characters. Reading about Thea trying to set up an art gallery after seeing ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Ploddingly predictable but with the feel good factor (357 words)

Thea has it all. Own house, own mortgage, own car, own teeth in fact lifes perfect, or it would be if shes didn't share her house with an assortment of untidy students. When the oportunity to escape to Provence on holiday with a friend at remarkably little notice presents itself Thea doesn't need much persuassion. Within days Thea and her sidekick Molly are ensconsed in a small French hotel auspiciously on an art tour but mostly because the married Molly has previously fallen for the very flirtatious tour leader and was back for a repear visit leaving Thea surplus to requirments. Still Theas a chatty lady and meets Rory who invites her to visit him in Ireland. ...  Read the complete review

Thea, a 35 year old, leads a very disorganised life. She rents out the rooms in her house to student lodgers whom she mothers. She has a part time job developing photographs. Due to persuasion from her friend, Molly, Thea joins Molly on a tour in France, where she meets an Irish painter called Rory. On return from France Thea jets off to Ireland on a whim to find Rory. Thea discovers Rory's landscape canvas paintings and decides that she wants to open a gallery to show them. All her friends are in shock, but Thea knows what she is doing. Artistic License by Katie Fforde was published in 2002. On reading this book I was slightly disappointed. The ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

Artistic Licence is a novel aimed at women by Katie Fforde. It follows the story of Thea, a woman who needs a new life. She has spent more years than she cares to remember looking after a houseful of students and needs to invest some time into herself. She ups sticks and moves to Ireland with her new bloke Rory, a charming but feckless artist. Unfortunately for Thea, its just not that easy to start a new life. Her bossy and demanding friend Molly soon turns up. She invites herself places and is always demanding to see Rory's latest paintings. She also brings with her Petal, Thea's ex lodger, who just happens to be Thea's least favourite person. ...  Read the complete review
