The characters in the novel are very appealing, particularly Dagny Taggart, there is a very clear divide between the good and bad characters which can seem a little opinioniated at times but does make for interesting characters. Ayn Rand has created a really fascinating world in this novel which seems familiar because it draws on our world, New York in particular but at the same time strange. The United States economy is suffering after greedy politicians impose industrial restrictions to benefit their own ends. Dagny Taggart tries to run and improve a railroad during this economic crisis. She decides to take a chance on a hybrid metal created by industrialist Hank Rearden in order to rebuild a railway line on its last legs and faces a lot of controversy as a result. Reading this book was an eye-opening experience for me. I was so enthralled by it that I read it for hours day and night until I finished it, which is impressive as books are usually just a before going to sleep thing for me. GREAT READING PLEASURE !!! There were torrents of images crowding my eyes, my brain had wild uncontrolled gushes of dense thoughts, my nerves had electric currents racing thru the length and breadth of body. My veins were surging with disturbed singed blood waves, I had to stop reading sentences at times to cope with the meanings they were forming. My whole being was fully busy absorbing the reactive emotions generated by this book. Desire of sleep nor hunger stop me from putting down the book, this is a massive book of over 1100 pages.
