I have seen this book down the library for weeks and weeks and I finally decided to bring it home for Noah. The story tells of Mr and Mrs Brains who are due to have a baby. Whilst being pregnant they try to encourage the unborn child to be 'brainy' by turning up the television when the news is on and various other activities. When the baby is finally born, he turns out to be extrodinarily clever and starts school on day two of his life. Within a couple of days he is a university graduate and a few days after that some scientists call to see if Baby Brains would help them with a space mission. If a children's book has won a major award that is judged by children, that's a sure sign that its target audience will love it. Such is the case with Simon James's 'Baby Brains', the overall winner of the Red House Children's Book Award in 2004. Subtitled 'The smartest baby in the whole world', the book's front cover shows a baby in a space suit space-walking against a bright blue sky speckled with silver stars and yellow dots. He's smiling inside his huge space helmet, and we know that he is no ordinary baby.
