Advantages: Fun and creative
Disadvantages: Unrealistic
I have seen this book down the library for weeks and weeks and I finally decided to bring it home for Noah.
The story tells of Mr and Mrs Brains who are due to have a baby. Whilst being pregnant they try to encourage the unborn child to be 'brainy' by turning up the television when the news is on and various other activities. When the baby is finally born, he turns out to be extrodinarily clever and starts school on day two of his life. Within a couple of days he is a university graduate and a few days after that some scientists call to see if Baby Brains would help them with a space mission.
The language in this book isn't the simplest I've seen but I think a two year old would get the gist of the story. The text is all over the place when it comes to reading it but I quite like this as it gives the whole thing character.
The pictures are creative and engaging with most of them being painted in water colour pastels. The illustrations of the characters remind me a little of the Roald Dahl books which to me is a good thing.
When I got to the second page of this story and it said how Mrs Brain put the baby to bed and came down the next morning, I knew that this story was going to be very imaginative; who ever heard of a newborn who sleeps through the night without a feed? My thoughts were right and the whole thing is totally out of touch with reality. Despite this I actually liked the book and found it funny and creative. Without giving anything away, the ending brings the whole thing back down to earth and makes you realize that it isn't too 'mad'.
Noah enjoyed this book too and had a little giggle at various points in the story. He was especially interested in the 'space' part of the story and asked lots of questions about what was happening.
If you like reading stories that are a bit 'off the wall' and unrealistic then this is definitely for you. There are also other books in the series which might interest you too.
Summary: An interesting read.
