Advantages: I got it cheap
Disadvantages: Little plot, characters I didn't care about, boring read
The Plot
This book doesn't have a particularly exciting plot to it. The main character is Anna, who is messed around by her rich, good-looking boyfriend Seb. At a party she meets Geri, who encourages her to follow her dream of becoming a writer. Having been ditched by Seb, Anna pours everything into this. After applying to an advert, she finds herself running around after writer Cassandra, whose child is an absolute nightmare. She then meets Jamie, who is the heir to a Scottish castle. Can Anna escape from her current situation at Cassandra's? If that plot description sounds horribly mundane, it's probably because I couldn't summon up any enthusiasm for the book. There was nothing much to the plot at all and it mostly trundled along.
The Characters
I found all of the characters to be pretty irritating. Anna is supposed to be a clever young woman but you wouldn't know this from the way she is sucked in by Seb and then Cassandra. By the end of the book, I really didn't care how she ended up. Cassandra is a spoilt and rather selfish character who takes Anna for granted and I really wished that Anna would stand up to her at various points in the "plot".
My Verdict
This is hardly the best book I've ever read. In terms of plot and thin characterisation, it is quite typical of a Wendy Holden book but this is probably the worst book of hers that I have read. I only persevered with reading it because I had nothing else to read! Even if you usually enjoy reading the author's books, I really would not recommend this one and I'm not alone on this, as I'm seen some pretty scathing reviews of it elsewhere too.
Summary: A very boring read
