This is a great yarn, a tale so chilling it almost defies belief. The story is as follows: In 1628 the Dutch ship Batavia runs aground on a rocky island off the coast of Australia. Oz is still "undiscovered" at this stage and the 200 survivors are in a fix. Thousands of miles away from anywhere and particularly the comfort and security of civilisation. The captain rigs up a dinghy and sets sail for help in the Dutch East Indies leaving the rest of the crew to fend for themselves. A Lord of the Flies type scenario ensues.
