"We tend to forget an important lesson: that those who know no history condemn themselves to repeat it, either as tragedy or [as] farce." The closing sentence of this fascinating history of America's failed experiment in social control, and for once I don't agree with what the author says. It isn't either/or: it's both. Not either tragedy or farce, but both tragedy AND farce.
