Advantages: A good, easy to read, helpful book
Disadvantages: None at all
I am really interested in self-help books and have quite a collection. This one is definitely one of the best that I have read! I usually buy this type of book and use it to dip into now and again as I feel the need as they can sometimes be heavy going to read in the way that one would read a novel. This one was quite different. I bought it to look at during a long train journey and I just read it easily from cover to cover. It contains good common sense advice written in the sort of style that it is an interesting read. There are also humorous quotes and cartoons throughout the book too. At then end of each section there is a paragraph entitled ‘in a nutshell’ which serves to remind you in just a few words what you have just learned about yourself. The first chapter is entitled Patterns and urges you to look at your own self-image, subconscious, health, pain and the way we fit into the everyday world. The second chapter deals with learning to live for now, rather than waiting for better times to come along, forgiveness, happiness, dealing with depression and humour. The third chapter deals with the mind. Looking more at the subconscious, imagination, metal rehearsal of situations, how to attract what we want from life, the power of words and gratitude. The fourth chapter deals with goals exploring limitations, problems, mistakes, risks, commitment, effort, persistence and results. The fifth chapter deals with learning from nature by watching children, learning to love, exercising, relaxing and going with the flow. The final chapter brings the whole thing together with the phrase ‘Here is where you begin’ The whole book follows a logical order. It is funny in parts, serious in others but never condescending and never ever goes down the ‘Americanisms’ path of hip catchphrases and talking to yourself in the mirror. Anyone who has had any dealings wit
h The Seven Habits of Effective People will know what I mean. I found this book really useful and it made me think about some things in a different and less self-destructive way. In fact I now intend to read it through again as I have slipped back into my old ways and I know that this book will be a great help to me. The ISBN number is 981-00-0664-0
