'The Belgariad by David Eddings' (Belgariad Series - David Eddings in general)
Advantages: Very good, likeable characters Disadvantages: simple, typical fantasy plot
This is at first glance anyway, typical fantasy fare, with the author spanning the story over several books to make people spend more money. Eddings however is an extremely good writer, he taught English at college and so understandably has an extremely good grasp of the language. His plots it has to be said, are very similar to each other, but then if this is the first Eddings series you've read that won't really matter. What's best about Eddings' fiction to me is his characters, he really creates well rounded, likeable characters better than most other authors I have read. The story is a typical fantasy story. A young farmboy is caught up in a strange quest and along the way discovers that he has strange powers that begin to manifest themselves, and has a destiny. Extremely well written. Summary: |
