Advantages: Very useful look at recovered memories of abuse
Disadvantages: none
Jennifer Freyd is the daughter of the founders of the False Memory Syndrome Foundation. She is also Professor of Psychology at Oregon University, and was abused by her father. "Betrayal Trauma" is written as a personal quest to come to a professional understanding of the issues surrounding accusations of so-called "false memories" of childhood abuse. Freyd recovered memories of abuse herself later in life and her accusations spurred her parents to create an entire and sadly relatively influential movement to question any recovered memories as false. Her father's later resignation as a result of a third party confirming his abuse of Jennifer thankfully now has to throw into question the whole false memory theory, and certainly the whole foundation on which the FMSF was built. Freyd puts together a clear and convincing psychological argument for the reasons why forgetting abuse would be a logical thing to do.Why remember something so traumatic if forgetting would, at least in the short term, serve survival better? If you're interested in the False memory debate, or in recovered memories, either as a survivor, or for another reason, this book is well worth the read. It's certainly one I dip into repeatedly and which I've found more than helpful personally.
