Advantages: quite entertaining
Disadvantages: too long, prefer other fiona walker books
I dived straight into this book after reading Fiona Walkers Snap Happy as Between Males starts off from where Snap Happy finished. Instead of carrying on with Jay and Juno as the main characters it concentrates on Odette. Odette is a high-flyer businesswoman with a restaurant to her name. Everyone thinks she is loaded and is running a highly successful business. The first few chapters of the book concentrate on the opening of Odette’s new restaurant ‘OD’. Calum Forester, London’s most popular investor in restaurants invests some of his money into OD and tries to take over. What people don’t know is how much trouble Odette is really in. It is hard to tell you a great deal more about the book without going into too much detail and giving away what happens. I don’t want to ruin it for any of you and by telling you more about many more of the characters will give too much away. This book takes you through some very low points in Odettes life. It introduces many of Odettes acquaintances from friends and family to lovers. It continues to introduce new characters up until the end. The other main characters apart from Odette and Calum are Felix Sylvian a fine chef, Cyd Francis a former singer, Jimmy Sullivan a bullying South African game ranger, Odette’s sister Monny, and many more of her wide circle of friends. I did enjoy this book although I preferred Snap Happy as I found that hard to put down throughout. The pace seemed to drop during this book and very often I didn’t feel bad about putting it down. It seemed to take ages to get into and was made complex by the amount of characters in the book. I was often made to rethink which character was which and whom they were related to. I felt that the ending became quite predictable although there were things that shocked me with the storyline throughout the book. If you like reading long books and like Fiona Walker’s other books
this is probably the next one on your list. I will be reading more of Fiona walkers books in the future but I think for the next read I will stick to a thinner book that won’t take as long to read. This book cost me £4.99 and was 697 pages long.

- 02/07/01 I was SO disappointed with the ending of this one, it was all so sweet and twee and nicely tied up that I could spit. Grr! Also, though I hate to criticize your op, isn't Felix Sylvian Freddy's boyfriend, not the chef? |
