How are the invisible entity and the cult connected and will Lacey have enough time to discover before see is put to rest? As a rule my horror collection consists of the disturbing yet tranquil worlds of Koontz and King. However, when I read that Laymon was also a good author in the genre I decided to have a read and see if I enjoyed it. Let me say that ‘Beware!’ is as far from the polite world of horror that you are likely ...more

Crowned Review Beware! - Richard Laymon: Beware those with a sensitive disposition (961 words)

If you have the inclination you may one day choose to listen to an old person. For all their wurthers originals and knitting they often have a lost of wise words to say. One thing you often hear is that life was better back in the day; less violent and less crime. If we follow their theory to the next stage this would mean that Victorian times must have been better than their day? What with the slave-like lives of the poor and the abundance of illness, maybe their right? What about in Victorian literature, surely people were more civilised there? I think not! Premium Review Beware! - Richard Laymon: Highly entertaining horror (115 words)
by philsammie - written on 16.07.00 (Somewhat useful, 26 readings)
Rating:

Beware! is in my opinion the most entertaining of Richard Laymon's earlier books. It is short (by Laymon's standards) but is snappy, fast moving and is basically just great fun. It's theme - invisibility - is of course hardly original, but that doesn't matter a bit when a novel is as entertaining as this. As a general rule, I prefer Laymon's later books: the writing tends to be more accomplished, the characters more complex, and the plots more involving, but Beware! manages to succeed precisely because it IS less complex and deep. It may not be at the cutting edge of originality, but you'll have a great time with it. ...
