Yes, yes, you're right. I lead a sheltered life. I actually decided to read a book -- Billy Connolly's World Tour of Australia (accompanies the TV Series) -- because Billy Connolly is a funny man.
At first sight, it seems like my reasoning is flawless, right? Billy Connolly is a mad, and brilliant, Scottish Comedian and Actor. Surely something he wrote would be
about humor. Surely it would be spot on funny. Comedy.
Yes, yes, he's done some serious topics -- The Bigger Picture: A History of Scottish Art; Billy Connolly: A Scot in the Artic; and Billy Connolly's World Tour of Scotland... and now Billy Connolly's World Tour of Australia.
To read this book, you had better be interested in Australia. To read this book, you had better be interested in the Human Spirit. To read this book, you had better appreciate the brilliant offbeat humor of Mr. Connolly!
When I first opened the book and started reading it, I had to put the book aside.
I was not READY to assimilate facts about Australia. However, the second time I picked up the book, I finished it in two days. Connolly is a GOOD storyteller. Very clear and very compassionate about the human species. Even though it would take me a few readings to retain all the Australian facts and figures I honed in, right away, on the Australian SPIRIT.
Connolly can empathize with free spirit renegades with big hearts, bigger visions, and a bit of madness to them -- it's obvious. He tells their story well. (And the photos are FANTASTIC!) Connolly made me, which I was afraid he would do... want to visit Australia!
This is also a treasure in its brief analysis of what makes a comic tick. THAT's why i picked up the book in the first place. The tidbits on what Connolly has to do to go out on stage night after night after night made this an invaluable read for me --- and the fact that he made me CARE about Australia is the ribbon o
n a very substantial present.
This IS a book I will read a few times.

(Page 135 -- I've made my wife promise to put 'Jesus Christ, is that the time already?' on my gravestone. I'm not going to be there anyway -- I'll be scattered all over Loch Lomond. She had a bit of a problem with it, so I've told her that the only other thing I'll settle for is TINY writing in the middle of a huge stone.
