This is an amazing book written about a true genius by the one person who knows him best, his wife Pamala Stevenson.

Billy Connolly has to be one of the funniest comedians of our time. He makes us laugh by talking about everyday occurances and embarrasing subjects like sex or piles.
In his stand up shows he talks a lot about his childhood and comes accross as beng a happy, funny character.

This book outlines the truth behind Billy's exterior. His wife who has studied to become a psychiatrist is definatly the most qualified person to write this biography. She explains the psychological reasons for his behaviour, his drinking problems and his anger.

This man lived the most horrendous childhood and suffered physical, verbal and sexual abuse as a child. He came from a very poor working class background in the worst part of glasgow during the second world war. It was a hard life for all but explains how Billy suffered not only at home but also at school. He struggled with the understanding of why he was so different. His Grandfather was Irish and could not get work, his father went to war and his mother walked out when was 2. He was underfed, running alive with scabbies and lice sleeping in a drawer for the first 8 months of his life until he moved in with his aunties. To top it off he did not agree with his catholic upbringing.

He lived with his two aunts who spent there spare time humiliating and beating him. Even when his father returned. His father sexually abused him for 6 years as he shared the same bed due to crowded conditions. The only comfort he recieved was from his older sister florance, who also suffered some form of abuse from the aunties.

The book is full of billyisms and profanities and also all the way through captures the true energy of billy. It leaves the reader with a growing admiration for a man who has been strong enough not only to over come this torture but has become a m
illionaire by making fun of his life. He has world wide fame and instead of harping on about his past he actually makes fun of it. He comes alive on stage.

I recommend this book to all his fans. It is funny, sad, heart wrenching and interesting. pamala's love and admiration also comes through as well. Definatly a hit with me.

I saw the Parkinson interview with them and I was intrigued about the book. I might read it.
