Advantages: Familiar characters, new plot

Disadvantages: Not an easy clean read!

This stretches Ian Rankin's rebus series way out of it's Edinburgh comfort zone & in to the excrutiatingly uncomfortable media spotlight. Rebus really seems to hold a grudge against this serial killer and in turn the media hold one against him. It is a faster paced faster flowing book than many of the series, but Rankin has not scrimped at all on any of the detail given. There is a tense undertone running through this book and this is not something to read and relax!
Although not the most likeable Rebus commands respect for his grudging detemination and his methods of dealing with tasks. His co-workers particularly Siobhan and Brian are more identifiable and easier to like.
Techniques used by the police in this books may seem underhand and unorthodox. At times Rebus has a death wish ( a choice of by drink or decision).
There are parts in this book that have your teeth on edge and it keeps you guessing till nearly the end

Summary: Rebus on form and annoyed.
