The pure grind of life drips off the page because James Lee Burke is such a poetic writer at times. Although you want Perry to escape his life of near slavery you know that it s almost impossible - death in the mines or in a bar brawl is far more likely. It is the character of Perry that makes the book worthy of reading. If it had just been the constant depression and spirit crushing description of the era I could not have lasted. It was in these dark moments that I felt the time period most, but also areas that made me dislike the book as it was hard going. ...

A Dave Robicheaux Mystery~ As may or may not be clear from this review I am a big fan of James Lee Burke, and particularly the twin story arcs revolving around Robicheaux and his other (unconnected) hero Billy Bob Holland. Prior to this book most of the recent stories have been set against a fairly stable backdrop. Domestically settled with his wife Bootsie he investigated a series of crimes with his partner Helen, taking an intensely personal interest in each case to a degree that is often detrimental to his health (he invariably gets a beating at some point in each story). In classic cop hero style he works off the clock to his own ...

The Tin Roof Blowdown - James Lee Burke

and fifty pages or so are the best and most involving. The internal monologue does get slightly confusing at times and having some background knowledge of Robicheaux character from James previous novels is recommended (but not essential.) But other than that I don t think there s anything I can personally fault about The Tin Roof Blowdown. It takes a lot for me to award a book five stars but in this case it really deserves it.
