Advantages: well written

Disadvantages: a bit too graphic and on the sick side

Having read a number of John Saul books before I was looking forward to Black Lightning since it dealt with a serial killer and I thought the thriller aspect would be an added excitement. Instead, the supernatural element was to the fore throughout and I caught on to what was happening far too early in the book which meant I spent the rest of the time waiting for the final revelation and show down which was bound to occur.

I was a little disappointed with this since I always knew what was going to happen throughout and it was only at the end that the book redeemed itself since the final couple of chapters were very gripping as everything came to a head and played itself out. The characters were well developed and the writing was good so it was certainly easy to read and I didn't feel like I had to plough through it to get to the end. In fact if it had been hard to read at all I wouldn't have bothered to complete it since it would have been a waste of time.

The horror aspect was fulfilled by the sick and depraved acts of the serial killer which I found very disturbing and a little graphic in the numerous descriptions. At the start it wasn't too bad since much of the detail was left to the imagination but in the middle of the book he seemed to almost revel in the nature of these sick acts against people and animals which I found a little hard to stomach. If you don't like gore then this isn't for you.

All in all this wasn't John Saul's best work but it was still well written and not a bad read.

Good op...I too worked out what was going on well before it was revealed, so like you spent half the time waiting for the book to catch up. Did enjoy it though.
