Advantages: very enjoyable
Disadvantages: individual volumes
Nihei has excellent drawing skills and surprisingly it's on the Tokyo Pop label.
Blame! is a serialised manga and the whole is better than each individual volume, although saying that the volumes are brilliant and the whole is amazingly brilliant. This is an epic tale of sci-fi, genetics and big explosions.
The gist of the whole story arc is a search/quest for 'Net Terminal Genes' - what this means will be revealed throughout the story at a set pace.
The quest has many parts and some back story is given to explain whats going on.
The artwork throughout is magnificent and consistently brilliant, I hear that Nihei trained as a architect - Throughout the volumes you will see Nihei's skill shine through; he creates a sense of claustrophobia in infinite space, and every variation thereon!
The story pacing is phenomenally well done and far too often i've found that i've spent a day reading through the Blame! series, there is so much detail to be absorbed and it deserves to be re-read, cross referenced and enjoyed repeatedly.
Volume 1 in any series is often the best of the whole series and the rest being let down - this is not the case here, volume 1 is fantastic and it just gets better and better consistently.
Nihei is widely known for his talent and copies of his work should be sought out - he's got a marvelous talent and you can see it from the get go.
Go buy this now.
Summary: just buy it by whatever means you have, if you like manga and stories, this is a must
