      Five out of five stars

      Blood bound by Rachel Vincent

--- Book Blurb (taken from Goodreads/back of the book) ---

Bound by blood, condemned by fate...

As a blood tracker, Liv is extremely powerful. And in a world where power is a commodity that can get you killed, Liv's learnt to survive by her own rules.

Rule number one? Trust no one.

But when a friend's daughter goes missing, Liv is bound by a potent magical oath. She can't rest until the child is safe. And that means trusting her dangerous ex, Cam.

A sinister prophecy tells that she and Cam will be the death of each other, yet Liv's tired of being a slave to destiny. She's ready to play the forces controlling her world at their own game.

      No matter what the cost.

      --- Review ----

"I love you, Olivia," he whispered, and my heart ached as if it would break in half. "You think we'll die if we stay together, but I've been dying slowly for the last six years. I'm taking my life back, Liv. Our life together. And this time, I'm not going to let you go."

I should say up front that Rachel Vincent is one of my favourite Young Adult authors, if you haven't checked out her Soul Screamers series then why not? But I was a little hesitant about picking up her new adult series - starting with Blood Bound. However, that was short lived because when I started reading Blood Bound I loved, loved, loved it. It was exactly the kick ass romantic paranormal weekend read that I desperately needed after a heavy and dull week. Blood Bound managed to draw me in from the opening sentence and just not let go until after I had read it and then read the next book in the series.

Don't get me wrong Blood Bound won't be everyone's cup of tea but I loved the more original setting and world building that Ms Vincent brings to Cam and Olivia's world. As often in the urban fantasy genre you can tend to meet the same sort of characters over and over again, the vampire, the werewolf, the devious fey, etc, etc, but it's my first time reading about blood trackers (can track anyone, anywhere with only the smallest amount of their blood to guide them), shadow walkers (people who can step into one shadow and walk out of anther somewhere else) and readers (people who can feel the truth in other people's words). All complete with a Mafia crime syndicate twist where when you are a member there is absolutely no saying no to your boss (literally), anything and everything goes. Intriguing I know but I don't want to say too much for fear of ruining the fun for those that have yet read it! :D

I'm not saying the whole story was completely original because it was a bit of a typical urban fantasy love story, but I really enjoyed Olivia and Cam's story. And if I am being very picky I did find that the pacing of the book was a little all over the place at times, there was a few points that the story moved along at a slower pace than I would have preferred and felt a little clunky. But, really overall the writing and plotting was everything that I have come to expect from Rachel Vincent - great, entertaining and just easy to read.

Personally, I really enjoyed the developing relationship between the two main characters - Olivia and Cam. They had history, they had chemistry and they had this whole star crossed Romeo and Juliet lovers thing going on that was completely corny but I devoured it up. Yes Ms Vincent might have gone a little cheesy at points but then everyone needs a good star crossed - we can't be together but yet we can't be apart - read from time to time.

Blood Bound gets the full five out of five star rating from me - just in case my review hasn't been completely clear I LOVED it and I am looking forward to reading the third book in the series, which unfortunately I believe will be the last. The third book in the Unbound series - Oath Bound will also be released this year (May 2013).
