I wish this series had stopped at The Last Precinct. It has gone on for too long now. The sudden shift in the prose grates too - I am so used to first person Scarpetta and now suddenly we have pretentious third person in present tense. What the hell was she thinking? It does feel like the books are being written by a different person who just has a handle on the Patricia Cornwell's dialogue. Scarpetta's lesbian niece is a pain in the backside and even the downright amazing Marino now gets on my nerves. Over the last year whilst reviewing the novels of Kathy Reichs, I have been pretty damning about some of the later novels of Patrica Cornwell so, whilst having a sort-out of my bookshelves, I decided to give this and TRACE (her last two Scarpetta novels) another go to see if they were any better after reading them for a second time. I could not remember much about them, but remember at the time of first reading feeling a tad disappointed that they were not up to the standard of Cornwell's earlier books.
