Kate Brannigan is a private detective who seems to lead a totally unconventional life style. She lives next door to her boyfriend Richard – they seem to share both houses, but still live separately – sounds good to me. Her business partner has just declared that he is selling his share of the business to move to Australia with his new girlfriend. Kate either needs to find a new partner or buy him out – which is financially a no no. She upsets her boyfriend by putting his death notice in the local Manchester paper in order to corner some devious people trying to take advantage of recently bereaved people. Ms Branigan is having a seriously bad week, her rock journalist, Richard's, death notice has just appeared in the newspaper, placed by her in order to track down fraudsters cashing in on peoples grief.
