Kate Brannigan is a private detective who seems to lead a totally unconventional life style. She lives next door to her boyfriend Richard – they seem to share both houses, but still live separately – sounds good to me. Her business partner has just declared that he is selling his share of the business to move to Australia with his new girlfriend. Kate either needs to find a new partner or buy him out – which is financially a no no. She upsets her boyfriend by putting his death notice in the local Manchester paper in order to corner some devious people trying to take advantage of recently bereaved people. Her best friend is a lesbian who has got herself and her girlfriend into bother by trying for a baby. This is not by conventional means of donated sperm, or just simply one of them sleeping with a man – no they go one further by seeing a doctor who has found a way of making babies with just the eggs from two women, no men involved. This is highly illegal and when the doctor is murdered Kate has to use all her detective skills to find out the truth behind both the medical research and the murder, all without implicating her friends. She is also in the middle of an investigation for Richards friends. They are a band who are having their gigs sabotaged. Kate has to find out why, which reveals who, which leads to big trouble. This is a really entertaining book, which keeps you hooked, not just for the action but for the comical overtones. Totally good read.
