Advantages: teaches different skills

Disadvantages: not very exciting story

I bought this book for my son for his second birthday as I thought it was a unique different kind of book but featured Bob the builder who is in His favourite characters list.

The front cover has a picture of Bob the builder standing by Roley, one of the members of his machine team, with his full beam headlight. When you open the front cover there is a sheet of acetate to pull out to remove Roley. The book itself is only twelve pages long, made partly of thick card pages and partly of acetate. The card is thin card but does seem to be so thick enough that it would easily tear.

The story follows the evening of Roley and after each page of the story is an acetate page which when you place Roley underneath the picture becomes clear but you still need to search around the page to find everything that is hiding there. During the story he visits the yard, travels along the road in sunflower valley before arriving at a surprise party. On each page you are asked to look fro something but there is plenty more to see.

All the common machines feature in this book and pilchard the cat can be found on every page.

The story itself is not that inspiring but does guide you through the different scenes and helps you to identify what you are looking for. My son mostly wants to look through the pictures rather than the story it may be of more interest when he gets older but I do not think so.

The book is labelled as not for less than 36 months of age due to small parts and while there aren't any particularly small parts I do supervise my son with this book. He has ripped the covered trying to pull Roley out of the sleeve but I was able to glue that back together but I like to use this to help with his concentration to slow him down and find lots of things. The pages in the book bound together with a spiral ring binder so do expect that at some point my son will rip at least one page out. When we get the book out even months later he either cheers or says "wow" I am sure that my son would highly recommend this book. I also can recommend it as it does teach different skills to all his other books.

I purchased this book from Wilkinson's in the reduced section and is currently available on Amazon at RRP for £6.99

ISBN no. 978-1405241724

Summary: highly recommended by my son and Myself
