Advantages: Expansion of young minds
Disadvantages: None
Children love good stories. Once they can read, they love to read to themselves. Before then, they love to be read to. There is nothing wrong with many of the modern books available to children, but some of the classics are hard to beat. Not only are the stories good, but the quality of writing, and the value the books will add in terms of your child's exposure to language, cannot be equalled by Mr Men (good though they are!). I am thinking of the best-known books, like Treasure Island, Black Beauty, Coral Island, Robinson Crusoe, books by Charles Dickens. Some of them. of course, are not easy for very young children, but few children are too young to appreciate having The Wind in the Willows read to them. My point is, I suppose, don't underestimate the capacity of children to appreciate good literature. More than that, don't make it too easy for them to avoid it by serving up only easy, low-grade stuff. Reading books should be fun, but it should (at least sometimes) be a learning experience as well. They will learn more from better books.
