I ordered the book "Borrowed Time" immediately after reading an excellent review of it by a fellow dooyoo'er (thanks, Trevor 15). In fact, I was off to amazon so fast, that I might not even have stuck around for long enough to rate the opinion and, once I'd placed my order, I could hardly wait for the book to arrive. Yet, when it finally did, and I had eagerly ripped the packaging off it, I was instantly disappointed. Superficial as it may seem, I hated the book's cover - I mean,I knew this was going to be a book about homosexuality but the cover phoyograph of a bunch of pink roses on a black background seemed just a little too ... "I don't know if I will live to finish this." So starts the memoir of Paul Monette. . . Finding this book on my reading list for a literature course, I certainly was not looking forward to spending a few days under an umbrella of gloom and misery. But I resisted the temptation to overlook it and plunged right in. I'm glad I did. It's a humbling experience to be faced with mortality, especially someone else's. Borrowed Time recounts the eighteen plus months where Paul Monette cared for his dying partner who was suffering from HIV and then AIDS.
