Brass Man - Neal Asher ... 'Mr Crane' to assist in a similar hunt encompassing star systems. When agent Cormac learns that this old enemy still lives, he sets out in pursuit aboard the attack ship Jack Ketch ...whilst scientist Mika begins discovering the horrifying truth about that ancient technology ostensibly produced by the alien Jain. Meanwhile, for the people of Cull, each day proves a struggle to survive on a planet roamed by ferocious insectile monsters, while they slowly construct the industrial base that may enable them to escape to their forefathers' starship - still orbiting far above them. But an entity with questionable motives, calling itself Dragon, assists them with genetic by-blows created out of humans and the hideous local monsters. And now the planet itself, for millennia geologically inactive, is increasingly suffering earthquakes.

The Skinner - Neal Asher

Premium Review The Skinner (230 words)
by MaldivesHoliday - written on 08/03/09 (Useful, 10 readings)
Rating:

across a continent facing horrendous nightmarish creatures. A cracking white knuckle ride of a read. The Sci-Fi tecky stuff is a bit too tecky if your not familiar with this type of genre but the flora and fauna described in the book are truly awe inspiring. the characters are fully fleshed out and the interaction between them and especially between them and the planets carnivores is superbly done. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as you can probably tell. Very Highly recommended. Written by Neal ...

The Skinner. WELCOME TO SPATTERJAY ... WHERE SUDDEN DEATH IS THE NORMAL WAY OF LIFE. Spatterjay, where the seas teem with hungry monstrosities, but Spatterjay holds immortality. When its giant leeches bite out gobs of flesh, they transmit a virus that forces regrowth, hence preserving the leech food supply. The book starts with Keech, Janer, and Erin arriving on Splatterjay, where the flora and fauna make this an altogether unusual and violent planet. Keech is an earth central security monitor, hunting Hooper, the alleged founder of the planet (Jay Splatterjay Hooper) and his former gang of slave traders and heading for some surprises on splatterjay. ...

Gridlinked - Neal Asher

Premium Review A good start for a new sci-fi world (374 words)

Rating:

Gridlinked is the first of Neal Asher’s novels I read, and I immediately fell in love with the his sci-fi world. The story is set in the future, in a human empire called the Polity. The Polity is run by artificially intelligent machines who have intellects that are vastly more powerful than that of normal humans, and they are responsible for both running society and also operating the runcible network, which is this universe’s method of instantaneous space travel. The plot follows a Polity Agent called Ian Cormac as he investigates the explosion of a runcible on a distant planet in the network. I do not want to go into too much detail and ruin the book, but it is a ...
