Minette Walters is a favourite of mine, perhaps simply because she writes in a way a woman understands and has story lines we can relate to. The Breaker was a number 1 bestseller yet it's plot is slightly weak and the story does not take you very far in it's complexity. However, any parent of young children will find it captivating and "need" to finish reading it. The book essentially focusses on a three year old girl who is found lost in the streets of Poole. Her mother is discovered dead and the case to solve her death and the circumstances leading to her daughter roaming the streets, many miles away begins. At times, the book is ... Another gripping tale from this superb writer,The Breaker kept me engrossed for a number of evenings. A naked and brutalized corpse, with all of the fingers smashed, was found on a beach in the Dorset area. Wandering alone, and not far from the grizzley scene, a couple find a toddler and hand her over to the police Later on, the police identify the body as that of Kate Sumner and the little girl as her daughter Hannah. Two suspects are immediately brought into the picture. Steven Harding, who is a young and good looking actor, he had called the police to inform them that two boys claimed to have seen a dead body on the nearby beach, and William Sumner ... The Breaker is Minette Walters' sixth novel. The Plot The plot of this Minette Walters thriller focuses on the occurrence of a 3 year old girl wandering around the streets of Poole on her own, and the discovery of her mother's body miles away. The police are quickly brought in to investigate the death, and suspicion falls on a young actor whose chartered boat is near where the girl was found as well as him being placed near the mother's place of death. As the story develops, the husband's alibi grows weaker, and then there is the strange occurrence that every time he picks up his daughter, she screams......... My Opinion As far ... I have only just been introduced to Minette Walters' writing - I had seen a number of her TV adaptations but had yet to read any of her books. I had been lent one of earlier books (Acid Row) and enjoyed it so I bought this one in a local book shop in its bargain bin. The books central story relates to the murder of a young mother and the abandonement of her young daughter. There are many twists and turns in the book that do keep you guessing. One of the main themes within the book is the deception that all the characters carry out, both to themseleves and to other people. I don't think that I liked the book as much as I had Acid Row because the pace ... Read the complete review

All my friends have been raving about Minette Walters for so long that I finally gave in and ordered the Breaker from Amazon. But I kept it sitting on a shelf for a couple of months before I finally read it in a day. I simply could not put it down. I have become quite bored with Patricia Cornwell and her Kay Scarpetta series lately and I'm happy to say that I've found a replacement. Based on this one book I have to say that I find Ms Walters to be an excellent writer and I look forward to reading her other books. Like so many female crime authors she tells a chilling tale and I was gripped from the first page to the last. The plot is superb and just as you think ... Read the complete review
