Advantages: Another good tale.
Disadvantages: None
Another gripping tale from this superb writer,The Breaker kept me engrossed for a number of evenings. A naked and brutalized corpse, with all of the fingers smashed, was found on a beach in the Dorset area. Wandering alone, and not far from the grizzley scene, a couple find a toddler and hand her over to the police Later on, the police identify the body as that of Kate Sumner and the little girl as her daughter Hannah. Two suspects are immediately brought into the picture. Steven Harding, who is a young and good looking actor, he had called the police to inform them that two boys claimed to have seen a dead body on the nearby beach, and William Sumner ,Kate's husband, who shared a stormy relationship with her. Both men have motives, opportunities, and means. Both men also are keeping secrets and lying to the police. To learn what really happened, PC Ingram knows he must somehow gain entrance to the inner thoughts of the two prime suspects. The Breaker is a taut psychological thriller that will leave you trying to guess the identity of the killer right until the very end, as all good mysteries should! The story line is exciting, loaded with red herrings, and filled with increasing tension. Though the characters, including the deceased, could have been more developed to prop up motives, fans of a non-stop, plot driven thriller will take immense pleasure from Minette Walters' dark tale. Anumber of her previous works have been turned into T.V dramas, such as The Scolds Bridle and The Sculptress, however the plot and the area in which I visualise it being set makes me think it might just turn out like and episode of Bergerac! No thanks!
