Crime does pay - at least here. (The Brethren - John Grisham)
Advantages: excellent story & characters Disadvantages: odd ending
This is basically two stories that become entangled with each other. On one hand, there are the Brethren – a group of three former judges locked up in a minimum security federal prison. They are involved in a mail swindle, blackmailing people and making themselves rich. On the other hand, there is congressman Aaron Lake, running for president with the help of some very powerful & dangerous friends. As with many of Grisham’s books, it centres on subjects which are currently very topical which is always slightly unnerving as wonder how much could be reality. The book is rather like many current blockbuster films, no deep meaning but plenty of entertainment. The plot is ingenious and intricately weaves together its two strands but the end is rather disappointing. However, the book makes great holiday reading. Summary: |
