The Devil and Miss Prym - Paulo Coelho

Premium Review Good verses evil (914 words)
by sirg0508 - written on 05/02/07 (Very useful, 623 readings)
Rating:

The Devil and Miss Prym is a clever story of Good verses Evil. Coelho introduces the two concepts of how evil came about – the early Persian idea that the God of Time gave birth to Good and Evil or the second idea is the story of Adam and Eve and ‘man as the instrument of Evil’. And so begins the story of a young woman (Chantal Prym) and her meeting with the Devil. He has plans and wants to know more about the psychology of people – if good really does exist or if the world balances with evil - leaving Chantal with the choice of riches or death. Chantal could either tell the people of her village that they would never have to work again and the promise of riches but in exchange one of the ...

The Zahir - Paulo Coelho

Premium Review A Novel Of Obsession (511 words)

I had never heard of Paulo Coelho up until last year until I was given the book "The Alchemist". I d heard of it before but didn t know much about it and after reading it I could see why Coelho and his work have been so influential and popular. I picked up The Zahir in the library; it s an independent fiction, so no prior reading is needed. This particular version of The Zahir was published in 2006 though dates back slightly further and is 268 pages; a decent amount of reading material to keep you busy :o) It s sub-titled "A tale of obsession" which nicely captures the essence of the book. If you don t know what Zahir means, as I didn t before ...

obsession. The Arabic word "zahir" has a number of direct translations, all connected to but not precisely defining the notion - it has instead become what one makes it. In Paulo Coelho s interpretation, it is a woman. A fusion of autobiography and fiction, but mainly the latter, The Zahir relates the story of a vastly successful novelist living in Paris, who narrates his search for his missing wife. Previously a war correspondent, Esther had no apparent reason to leave, but neither is there any hint of a sinister aspect to her disappearance. The narrator comes to thinking that there is some aspect of his life, or existence - perhaps his conception of the ...
