Advantages: Very funny and entertaining
Disadvantages: none
Well if I'm going to watch the film it only makes sense to read the book first. (Only so I can sit in the cinema and bug Mr F saying 'thats not in the book' a million times!!). So after trawling around a few books shops (surprise, surprise none left), I finally got my hands on a copy. The book is based on Bridget Jones' Diary (Noooo really???), and starts with her New Years resolution list. This is very funny because not only does it mirror most of mine (including forming an adult relationship!!), it sets the tempo and emotions of the book. Poor old Bridge, chain smoking, alcoholic thirtysomething who isn't married yet. As she says she will probably end up being eaten by an alsatian (?!). Each day is started with a round up of calories consumed, fags smoked, alcohol units drank, and then goes into a narrative about her day. It is extremely funny in places and provides quite an insight into thirtysomething society today. (we all know someone like her!). It really is a wonder that she hasn't ended up in a loony bin what with her mad mother and awful boyfreind, but it turns out alright in the end. I enjoyed this book immensely, not only because it is so easy to read, but because the plot carries you along, until you are willing Bridge to get off her backside and DO something about her life! Instead she waits for invites to parties and moans about being around 'Smug-marrieds'. If you read this book you can see why the film will be such a box office hit and I can't wait to get started on Edge of Reason to see how her life goes with Mr Darcy. Go on read it - it should appeal to both sexes, and will provide an entertaining read.
