Advantages: Good girlie read, not too long!
Disadvantages: Quite easy to put down., Over hyped
Early summer, temperature is mid seventies, ironing pile is calling, dust on TV needs rearranging, but there isn't a cloud in the sky, can't resist it me - good book and some sunshine before the after school onslaught. So Bridget Jones's Diary it is, bought on the recomendation of fellow Dooyooers. I haven't seen the film, so only had hearsay to go on, with that in mind I have the images of Hugh Grant and Colin Firth as the main players, so last week I started this ' hyped by the film' book. It is as you expect the ramblings of a thirty something and a year in her life revolving around her family and friends including her mad mother - Pam - gay best friend Tom and her girlie friends Jude and Shazzer. The love interest revolves around Daniel, her boss and the unreachable Mark Darcy (clever use of surname if you ask me!) and the inner thoughts that us girls have about flirtations and experiences with the male breed. No spoilers here, however, I identified with Bridget and her worries, her self confidence, feelings of inadequacy, her goals that she constantly tried to meet and her fairly optimistic approach to life, aswell as enduring hours wasted of hot summer days while your man watches cricket with curtains drawn...(any cricket widow will relate to that scenario) although it is all rather more exaggerated than my life. It is a funny account of the year and I did find myself smirking, or chuckling at her antics but no belly laughs, well there is the bit with Gav......oops sorry I said no spoilers! Something serious happens within Bridget's world and roles are reversed in the family support situation, she handles it, still with a few selfish thoughts but with well meaning for those concerned. I believe the final sequence is okay, but perhaps a tad unrealistic, I think Helen Fielding could have tied a few loose ends, but it's her charachter, who am I to argue? I would like
to see the film, on the strength of the book as I have these visions of Hugh Grant playing Mark Darcy, and some real bad boy playing Daniel. This book is not a must read, it served it's purpose for an a couple of afternoons in the sun - more recommended for some easy holiday reading - but more for the girls, please don't take this as an insult lads, but this is a girlie read, if you want to to know how a woman's mind works, then this book will confuse you even more!!

- 28/05/01 You'r absolutely right about it confusing me more. When I read it I was never quite sure whether she was smart and streetwise or a dippy airhead! |

- 27/05/01 I have to say I thought that the film was much better than the book, which I found repetitive and whiny. But I can see the books appeal. |
