Bringing down The Moon
By Jonathan Emmett and illustrated by Vanessa Cabban
After my recent and ever so successful trip to our local library we came back with about seven books all ranging in story and format. This particular book grabbed my attention, as it is in board book format so easy for Jack to grab hold of and try and turn the page himself! Of course getting it from the library is the cheapest way to enjoy the book but the price on the cover is a reasonable £4.99 pence.
The book consists of 24 large board type pages each one has a brilliant illustration coving the entire page with writing over the top of the picture. There are not too may words within the whole book but enough for a short story and perhaps ideal for a bedtime.
The story is basically about a small mole aptly called "mole" that sees the moon up in the night sky and thinks, "…that it was the most beautiful thing that he had ever seen." He decides that he must have the moon and continues through out the book to try to get the moon down.
Whilst trying to get the moon mole wakes a few friends of his such as rabbit, hedgehog and squirrel who all tell mole that he will never be able to bring down the moon. Mole carries on regardless and try as he might he cannot get near enough.
Mole attempts to climb a large tree as he sees the moon balancing on a branch, he's nearly got it when he falls from the tree into the middle of a puddle. He sees the moon lying in the puddle and thinks it has fallen along with him from the tree. As he reaches out to get it he sees the moon splinter into a hundred tiny pieces and disappear.
Mole thinks he has destroyed the moon and sits and cries. Soon after his friends rabbit, squirrel and hedgehog appear to see if mole is OK. He tells them that he will never be able to see the moon again as he has pulled it down and now broken it. His friend's dance and cheer as they tell mole that he will indeed see the moon again, he hasn't broken it and he certainly didn't pull it down!
As the four friends look up into the night sky they see the moon coming out from behind a cloud and are all able to bask in its beauty.
The whole book is wonderfully illustrated and has such a lovely story to it that I enjoyed reading it and Jack enjoyed looking at all the pictures. I would say it is certainly worth paying out the £4.99pence for. I will probably hire it again from the library but I am probably not going to hunt it down and buy it for Jack. The main reason for this is that he will soon be moving away from board books and there really are not enough words in the book for me to want to buy it for him. I think if it was one story in a large collection of stories then it would be worth paying for but I am quite happy to have been able to borrow it out from the library.
All in all though a really good children's book with a warm tale of friendship and beauty. It can't be bad can it!
5*s
Summary: a nice book to read
