At one time cookery books were to me what comfort blankets are to toddlers. I liked to know they were there and I could access them at any time but often paid them scant attention until I was feeling insecure! This sensation would most usually overwhelm me when called on to cater for people outside my immediate family. It always filled me with dread, often reducing me to a tired and emotional state even before I had taken refuge in the bottle of cooking sherry.
