Advantages: Fast Paced Storylines
Disadvantages: Shallow, No Character Development
Terry Brooks is a fantasy author. He has sold over twenty million copies of his books over the years, which makes him one of the biggest Fantasy writters of all time.
Brooks was born in 1944 in Illinois, America. He spent much of his life there growing up and getting into his writing. He started writing at a very young age and tried a few different ideas and styles of writing. Then he read the Lord of the Rings and decided the fantasy world was what he born to write.
He released his first book in 1977. The Sword of Shanara was a big hit and was the first fantasy book to make it into the New York Times best sellers list. This was a big deal for Terry Brooks!
Brooks has writen several different series' of books, most are trilogys although some of his series' are longer. Many overlap and come back to world where earlier series were set.
I have not read all his books, but I have read The Vogage of the Jerle Shanara trilogy and also the High Druids of Shanara Trilogy. I enjoyed the books but am not really a huge fan of Brooks. There was just something lacking for me in his writing style.
There is lots of action in Brooks' books but for me they are to quick to get into the action. He does not set the scene very well for me. He does not seem to develop the characters as well as other authors and its hard to really get to know the characters.
He is good at a good paced story, the books really flow and there is always plenty going on. However the story can sometimes be a little obvious, and there are not many surprises in store for readers.
These are possibly books aimed at slightly younger readers. They are not as deep and complicated as most fantasy books I have read. Some people may like that, but for me I like to really get deep into the story rather than just skirting over the top as Brooks sometimes does. It sometimes feels like bits of the story are missing from his books.
I don't think I will read any more of Terry Brooks' books, whilst they were certainly not terrible, they were just not for me. He is a good author, but not a great author. However some people I am sure will enjoy his style of writing, so maybe you should see what you think yourself.
Summary: A Decent Author But Nothing Special

- 03/10/09 Read the first Shannara Trilogy because they were recommended by Stephen King but haven't read any others. Just seemed to be the same story written three times! |

- 29/07/09 yeah, couldn't agree more, there is just a little fire or emotion or something missing from Brooks...or to be fair the ones I have read at least. |
