Every page is the same and the only thing that changes is the animal that features on each double spread. The pictures are very big and bold and the only thing that features on the double page is one animal. The background is white and it basically reminds me of a babies picture book but for an older child. I found this book quite boring compared to the other books that Carle has written becau...more

Premium Review Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?: A purple cat? (366 words)
by - written on 17/10/09 (Very useful, 33 readings)
Rating:

This book is written by Eric Carle which is the same guy who wrote classics like 'The hungry caterpillar' and 'The very busy spider'. He is very well known and when I saw this one at our local library, I could tell it was written by him even before I read his name because the illustrations on the front was so distinctive. I normally spend a few moments flicking through a book to see if I think it's suitable for Noah but with this one I didn't because I knew it would be good. The text within the book is very repetitive and simple to the point where Noah who is two, had remembered it even though we had only read it to him once. This book has got all the ingredients to be a classic and much loved children's book. It has beautiful illustrations by Eric Carle who also is responsible for "The Hungry Caterpillar", and at 24 pages of actual text, each being one sententce long it is ideal bed time story length. So do children actually like it? My children absolutely love this book, and if we had to choose our top ten it would figure in the list for sure. More tellingly I still like it too even though as the battered pages indicate I must have read it hundreds of times. I am an avid reader and it is books like this that I think pass on the reading bug, which is a good ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do YOU See? (430 words)
by - written on 26/02/09 (Very useful, 62 readings)
Rating:

...I see a big colourful book looking at me! This is a lovely brightly coloured, A4-sized paperback book with interesting illustrations of lots of different animals on each page for your child to explore. The book starts with a rainbow of colours on the very first two pages, which my son loved to name each time. The book starts with "brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?" To which he replies; "I see a red bird looking at me". This rhyming continues with each animal on every page, giving the book some repetitiveness, which apparently helps children to learn language, and lets them know what might be coming (familiarity). ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review From the man who brought you the Hungry Caterpillar (294 words)
by - written on 17/10/09 (Very useful, 21 readings)
Rating:

From the man behind The Hungry Caterpillar comes a fascinating children's book. This story is about seeing different animals. Each double page focuses on a different animal and its colour. The story is repetitive and simple. This makes it ideal for young readers (my two year old had memorized the book after being read it just once!) It empowers children to read and learn basic words, and I love that. As an adult reading it to a child, it gets a bit dull- not a lot happens to be sure! The best bit is the illustrations. They have the same block ink scractchy style as the hungry caterpillar book, and it's a really distinctive style. Right ...  Read the complete review
