Advantages: Fantastic stories, glorious characters high paced action/combat sequences

Disadvantages: A lot of jargon to get through for the unaniciated reader, butwell worth it

Dale Brown has been working in the background of the military fiction section for years.

I first came across him when i read Flight of the Old Dog, a fantastic tale based around the super secret military base Dreamland and a new experimental aircraft a heavily modified B-52 nick named the old dog.

The characters in this book are described expertly, and the action scenes are totally breath taking. His other books often draw on the characters discovered here people like McLanahan, Elliot, Hal Briggs, Ormack and Luger.

The time line of the settings started off a little jumbled bit with his later offerings such as Battle Born that became more ordered and the books can even be seen as a history of the main characters.

One of his books, Silver Tower is set in a completely different area and is based around a space combat station. This i believe was actually his first ever book, and is also of a high standard.

Basically if you are into the military in anyway, read any authors along the line of Tom Clancy and numerous others Dale Brown is a fantastic choice. He is fantastic at holding your attention, he has actually been in the cockpit of various American aircraft as a crew dog before he started writing. The main thing that may stop people is the high amount of technical 'jargon' though this also attracts some other readers due to its realisim.

The stories he paints can be seen to be utterlly unrealistic but looking at the current political situations, news stories at the time the books where written you can actually see some of the things actually happening. The break up of Russia, China becoming even stronger, nuclear weapons being freely available to the highest bidder these are all facts that are drawn in to give each novel an amazing plot. Sure some of the aircraft described are drawn from a pilots/crew dogs desire to get the best out of everything but honestly i think they could work though the expense of
the projects would be immense.
